Dramatically Vertical

What began in the 19th century as a great idea will be brought to a monumental end in the 21st. In Spain, the Sagrada Familia Temple in Barcelona, conceived with dramatic verticality by the famous architect Antoni Gaudi, is being completed, also with help by Hilti.

Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi devoted more than forty years of his artistic effort to erecting the temple, which, since then, has become the most visited tourist attraction in Barcelona. When he begn this work on November 3, 1883, he was thirty-one years old and absolutely determined to enjoy is artistic independence.

Although the foundation stone for the Sagrada Familia has already been laid on March 19, 1882, a dispute with the originally assigned architect Francisco de Villar put a rapid end to his more conventional plans. Only six months before his fatal accident on June 10, 1926, Antoni Gaudi actually saw the first of the planned twelve, 100 meter belfries completed.

As envisioned by Antoni Gaudi, a central dome, consecrated to Jesus Christ, will one day tower 230 feet above the belfries. And even the dome of Mother Maria over the apse is planned to be 410 feet tall. Nothing less than dramatic vertically existed in the mind of the visionary architect, and, now, others are putting it into practice. After the destruction and devastation of the Spanish Civil War, construction work began again in 1952.

A private foundation, the Junta Constructora del Templo Expiatorio de la Sagrada Familia, has set itself the goal of completing, maintaining, and restoring this edifice that embraces several epochs. To this end, Hilti Spain supplies rotary hammers, powder-actuated tools, diamond systems, and anchors to the building site.
